Local Organizer Returns from Middle East Summit – Announces Plans for Next Event
Jerry Christy, a member of the organizing committee for TEDxWilliamsport (http://tedxwilliamsport.com) recently returned from the first-of-its-kind Global TEDxSummit held in Doha, Qatar.
Christy was one of 700 TEDx Organizers, representing 90 countries who gathered in Doha for a week of meetings, seminars, cultural events and idea-spreading as guests of the Doha Film Institute, TED, and a number of other sponsors.
What is TEDx?
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxWilliamsport, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxWilliamsport event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.
To date there have been two TEDx events in Williamsport (October 2011 and February 2012). With the experience and benefit of the global TEDxSummit behind him, Christy announced today that the next TEDxWilliamsport event is scheduled for Wednesday, October 24, 2012. Details will be released via the event website (http://tedxwilliamsport.com) as they become available.
Asked what he came away with from the TEDxSummit, Christy said, “Nationality. Culture. Politics. These are all just words. When you boil it all down people are the same everywhere. They want, need and cherish the same things. From time to time we need proof of this and TEDxSummit 2012 was a proving ground for 700 Believers in the Power of Ideas. We all take our work seriously, but not ourselves.”
